Okay, super crazy week but here I am, as always. A little late but it's still before the weekend is over. So, we're talking about Crewel today. This book is about a girl named Adelice who has the ability to weave...stuff. Not clothing or anything like that, it's more like time and matter. It's hard to explain, obviously. Anyway, in this world, this skill is highly desired but Adelice doesn't want it because it means she gets taken away from her family forever. But she ends up getting caught anyway and has to be taken to the Guild, the government in this world, so she can be trained and taken care of for the rest of her life. On the surface, this seems like a dream come true, but there is always more than meets the eye.
I want to start out by saying this is the most original book I have read in a long time. The world and the ability to weave is so unique and has a magical quality to it that is captivating to read about. However, I don't think that the concept was ever properly explained so I was left a bit confused at some points and that's also why I can't explain it all that well to you guys. I think that in later books in this series the author will definitely expand on the world and we will get to learn more about the origins and see it on a grander scale.
Adelice is a pretty solid female character. She for sure has her priorities straight and wants to do what's best for her family but it isn't easy for her. I really liked how lost she seemed when she was first taken to the Guild; it added a sense of realism to the whole situation. She was curious but also knew when to sit back for her own good.
The rest of the characters were like the plot; forgettable. There was just something, or something missing from this book that made it stick in my mind as something that I wanted to keep reading. I got bored with the plot on several different occasions, even when there was progress being made. I just didn't care. There was a love triangle going on but I couldn't really care less who Adelice ended up with. Overall, this book was so original and I'm glad I read it, but nothing about it made it stand out. It was good, but not great. 3 out of 5 stars.
