Yes, I just now read this book. I know. It took a while. But oh, well. Here are my thoughts. This book is about a guy named Miles, nicknamed "Pudge" early on, who ends up going to boarding school. He is considered a looser, in a way. Never had many friends, was bullied, but also pretty smart. So he goes to this new school and, you guessed it, is socially awkward but still makes some new friends and this book is basically about his life during his junior year at this school.
Now here's the thing about John Green books (keep in mind I've only read three of them) they aren't plot heavy. This could be a good or a bad thing, just depending on your personal preference. I like character driven books so I don't mind it that much, but I do like a complex plot as well. So reading about these characters, yes, they're interesting and it was still entertaining, but it got boring at times.
Another thing about this book that I found annoying was the characters. Not all the time, but certain things about them that I don't like. Mostly that they were stereotypical teenagers. By that I mean they were experimenting with drugs, sex, and alcohol. And that was pretty much all of them. Now this is not a major part of the book, far from it, but it was still there and I still noticed it. It was prominent enough to the point of being annoying because it conveys the thought that literally all teens are doing this in high school.
So that was everything I have to say about this book as far as negativity goes. I felt the need to get that out there because I know everyone raves about this book and I just want you guys to know I think it was flawed. This book was not perfect, but was really good. Even if I think a John Green book is just okay, I will never say it wasn't funny, or insightful, or entertaining. This book WAS funny and insightful and entertaining. I give credit where credit is do and this book is absolutely worth reading. I personally don't think it was better than The Fault in Our Stars like many say, but it was really good. Some of the things that are talked about in this book are really thought provoking and I think that's what a lot of John Green's books do; they reflect on little things and are put into a book to share with the rest of the world and it's always done beautifully. No, it's not perfect, but yes, it's amazing. 4 out of 5 stars.
