Recently, I've been looking at my physical TBR pile and for those of you who don't know, this year I've made it my goal to not own more than thirty unread books. So far, I'm exactly at thirty so I'm good but looking at my pile of books, I'm not happy with what I see. Here's why. I have books on my pile that I've owned for probably two and a half years now and I still haven't read them. It's not because I don't want to or I think they're boring, otherwise I wouldn't have bought them. There have just always been other books that I see on my TBR pile that I want to read more.
When I first started reading avidly about three years ago now, I bought way too many books that I heard of and I thought sounded mildly interesting. I read a good amount of them and I thought they were okay but not outstanding. Now, I'm much more picky about what books I buy because I only want to own thirty unread books and I want those books to be ones that I'm excited about reading. I'm tired of looking at the books I have to read and thinking only half of them really have me excited. this may be what has contributed to my slight slump that I'm in recently.
So here's what I'm going to do about it. Every once and a while I will pick up a book that I "don't" want to read. And what I mean by that is I'm going to pick up a book that is not at the top of my priority list right now. I want to get those books that I've owned for more that a year off of my TBR pile. If I get into it, great, if not, I may put it down and come back to it later. I want to give every book a fair chance but I won't be strictly limiting myself to read that book. So far, I've picked up Incarceron by Catherine Fisher which I have owned for probably around two years and haven't read until now and I'm really liking it. I'm glad I really pushed myself to pick it up. The next thing I'm doing is concerning the books that I am planing on buying. I don't want to buy a book that isn't going to get me excited to read it and that I don't see myself reading soon. This will limit the books that I buy and it will also keep my TBR exciting and something that I look at and I think that I have awesome books to choose from. If you follow me on Goodreads, you may see that I took off around 150 books from my TBR pile on there because I heard either mediocre things about the book or because I just lost interest in reading them. I don't want to waste my time on books that are just okay when I know they are just okay.
Looking at my TBR right now, I see some books that I'm super excited to read and others that are just taking up space. I may read those books or just donate them but I do want to get rid some of those older books that I own one way or another and I can't wait to get more books that I have been wanting to read for a long, long time. I am, however, very happy with my thirty books that I don't have read because I know some people haven't read half of the books that they own. Yes, they own more books that they haven't read than the ones that they have read and I'm glad I can say I am not one of them. Thank you guys so so much for reading this post and I'll see you next week. I also just now realize I never explained TBR. For those of you who don't know, it stands for to be read.
