#5: Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter
I know, she a universally hated character. If you haven't read the series, I won't spoil it too much for you. Basically she is the most thick headed, ignorant, unfair, puppet in the whole series. But that's the character she's meant to play. I hate her purely because she is everything I hate. The amount of bias that she has within her is offensive but then again, those are just some of the things that bother me most in general and she just is the epitome of them all. But, at the end of the day, that's her purpose. She's supposed to annoy us and make us want to strangle her so I can let this character slide a little because she is effective in her role.
#4: Nick from The Great Gatsby
I didn't like this book to begin with. That being said, the point of view from which it is told is a bit weird and here's why. It's effective because the story is essentially about Gatsby but telling it from his perspective wouldn't be the best thing. If you read the book, you may know why. His perception of some things is a bit skewed. So the author told it from Nick's perspective but by doing so, he made Nick constantly be in the way. He's always the third wheel. We don't know much about him and we don't care at all about him. We care more about Gatsby which is a good thing overall but it leaves Nick as an annoying character who is only useful for narration.
#3: Juliette from Shatter Me
So this is where we get controversial in this list. The next three are not going to make people happy. I didn't really like Juliette. She was fine at the beginning but past that when she questions some things, I couldn't stand her much longer. She is very selfish in my opinion because she was leading on a guy for a good part of the series and I know it wasn't intentional but she could have been more up front with him. And the ending, don't get me started! This is probably the least satisfying ending I have ever read purely because Juliette played the victim role when she was the one that caused the whole damn thing! And she had the nerve to make the guy look like he's a bad person! Then she cuts him off like they didn't share anything special. She infuriated me by the end of the last book.
#2: Eleanor from Eleanor and Park
Really, I probably could have switched this character with the one form #3 but I think Eleanor is more of a realistic character of the two which is worse because she reminds me of a few people I am not too fond of. My major complaint with her is just that she has very little behind her. And here's what I mean: she has her home life, and if you've read the book, you know that gives her a good character but that doesn't excuse of her behavior in the book. She's the type of person who has very strong opinions on things but when you ask her why, she will be offended by that and not give you an answer just a tantrum. It's childish. I also think she puts less into her relationship with Park than he does which is always annoying to me. I have to say, though, I find it interesting because when I say I didn't like this book as much as other people do, people are surprised but when I say it's because of Eleanor, they seem to give me an understanding look so I can't be the only one.
#1: Bella Swan from Twilight
I know this is a common person for people to hate on but it's for good reason. And I know that some people will murder me for saying this but I have read the series so I feel like my opinion is very much valid. Bella is the most selfish, useless, whiny, dull, spoiled character I have ever read. She hurts people, albeit, unintentionally, because she wants them in her life and refuses to let them go. She gets everything she wants and when she gets more than that, she complains. She never sacrifices anything for the people she loves: she has them do all of the sacrificing for her. She has no personality. Her life revolves around Edward and as soon as he leaves her for more than a day, she loses herself. She sets a terrible example for girls. Is she the worst character ever? Not really. She does have good intentions most of the time, but her selfishness is just so prevalent and it doesn't even add anything to her character. She never faces consequences for what she does. I'm all for characters having flaws, even annoying ones, but hers just add to the unrealisticness of the whole series, especially since they're never addressed.
Those were my top five least favorite character of all time. This list brought out the anger that I have had held in for so long with these character. Again, sorry if I offended you or if you don't agree with me but I do feel like all of my opinions are valid just like yours. I really enjoyed making this post. There's just something about ranting about things I don't like that is just so therapeutic and fun for me and I love unpopular opinions. I hope you enjoyed this post and I'll see you next week.
