Jumping right in now. This book is about a girl named Kendall who lives in a small town. She is a normal high school student with the exception that she has OCD, literally, and her unofficial boyfriend goes missing only months after a local school girl. Now she is trying her best deal with the loss while also clinging to the hope that he's still alive with the help of the two new kids in town. This is basically your small town ghost story told as it happens-first person account.
I really enjoyed this book for that aspect. I love small town ghost stories and I find them so fascinating. The thing is, I find the story experience to be completely different when it's told from first person and when it's told like an urban legend. Personally, I like the latter better because it adds to the whole mystery of it. It makes it harder to firmly stand on one end. Do you believe it or not? There was one point where I read a line and thought no way could this actually happen. That being said, I did find it interesting that it was told in first person, especially by someone who has OCD I just wish it were different.
The characters were definitely unique. I thought Kendall was super realistic and she was the first character I read that had a disorder like OCD. I felt like it added a layer to her that most other authors don't bother adding. Someone out there is going to read this and relate to her on a new level and that thought is pretty awesome. The rest of the characters were alright. I didn't feel attached to anyone else like I should have been. This book is mainly Kendall's story which is fine but, again, I think that would have worked out better if it was told as an urban legend. It would have made it a lot more creepy.
I also appreciate the length of this book. McMann knew exactly how long to make it without having it seem too drawn out. It was absolutely eerie without making me want to pee my pants. Much appreciated. While this book wasn't perfect, it was still highly enjoyable and a good Halloween read. 4 out of 5 stars.
