So I recently read this whole series and I have to say, I really liked it. So in case you didn't know, this series is bout a girl, Juliette, who can't touch anyone because her touch will kill anyone. Well, almost anyone. More on that later though. Because of that, she has been separated from the rest of society and has been kept like a prisoner for most of her life. But she gets the chance to escape and she meets a guy, Adam, who can touch her. But it turns out Warner, who has kept her captive and wants to use her as a weapon, can also touch her. And this is obvious so this isn't a spoiler but there is a love triangle between all of them. There is also kind of a huge pending war, but that's kind of a minor thing.
So I will start off by saying that this series was amazing. It is so fun and addicting. I flew through all of these books. You get invested in them so quickly and I have to say that this love triangle is the most investing one ever because you really don't know who will end up with Juliette. The characters are all pretty well flushed out but I will say that I wished we got to know more about them in some ways. I wished we knew a little bit more about her past especially with her parents. Adam is the sweetest person ever even though he has had some heartbreak in his life. Warner is probably the most complex in the whole series since we are constantly learning and seeing different sides of him. But I do question if his past makes up for what he has done since. Kenji is definitely my favorite character in the series. He's so funny and adds a touch of light into the whole situation. I also appreciate that he smacks some sense into Juliette since no one else will.
There are some things that I don't like about this series though, mainly towards the end of it. I'm going to be honest with you guys, I am not happy with who Juliette ended up with. Not so much because of who it was but more like how she decided who. I'm not going to reveal who it was but I will say that Juliette was completely selfish. Now, the guy isn't completely innocent - the break up was incredibly messy on both sides - but Juliette only sees herself as the victim. She led both guys on because she couldn't decide who she liked more. And after all of the two of them had been through, we don't get to see a proper closure with their relationship. We literally get two or three sentences as an acknowledgment of what happened. That's it. Wow. I know.
I also don't like how we discover something either late in the second book or early in the third but we don't ever see it confronted between two characters. I just felt very incomplete due to that. I also thought that the whole war thing was barely in the plot. This series is for sure a romance series first and foremost, action second. I think that isn't pretty annoying at times since the greater good is at risk and Juliette really only cares about her love life. Like, get your priorities straight.
I did enjoy this series, let's get that straight, but I think this is such a beloved series and I think that I needed to recognize it's faults, mainly the ones toward the end of the series. Shatter Me as a whole is a fun, addicting series. If you like romance, primarily a romance, in a dangerous situation and you like love triangles, I think this series will suit you very well. I for one, would have liked to see a lot more action and more consideration on Juliette's part. I also don't like love triangles that much. I know, sue me. But Shatter Me was still a fun read and I do recommend it. 4 out of 5 stars.
