Love Triangles

I have something special planned out for this month and they all revolve around love triangles. To kick off this month, I'm discussing my intense dislike for them. So, I want to start out by defining the term love triangle. For the purpose of this blog, a love triangle is when a protagonist has two people like them in a romantic sense, and they return those feelings to both of them in some capacity. Now, that that's settled, lets talk about the pros but mostly the cons of love triangles.

We'er going to start with the pros. It does reveal a lot about the main character because of who they choose. I also like the fact the two choices typically represent two different paths that the character could take. Yeah. That's about all that I like about them. Pretty much. Let's move on to the fun stuff.

There are many reasons as to why I don't like them. The main one is that it is so unrealistic. I have never met anyone who actually has or even wants this situation. If you truly liked someone, you wouldn't have feelings for another person. I think it paints an inaccurate and negative picture of what teens are experiencing. You shouldn't want to or even have this situation. It's not like a right of passage for people to go through.

Another reason I don't like them is because it makes the main character seem like a bad person, at least in my eyes. If you know you have feelings for another person, why are you stringing someone along? That is a horrible thing to put someone through. It especially annoys me when the two other people involved in the love triangle know about one another but aren't as mad about it because they just want the girl to choose them over the other but really, why aren't they upset that she is looking at another guy? It is, again, unrealistic and it makes the person, let's face it, usually a teenage girl, look bad because they are toying with someone's emotions. And I know they aren't doing it on purpose, but they do some serious emotional damage to the guys involved.

The final real issue I have with love triangles is that it just isn't enjoyable to read for me. I don't like reading about a character that I really like with a character that I don't like. I don't think anyone does. For example, if you like Katniss with Peeta, why would you want to read scenes with Gale? (No offence to anyone who does like Gale/Katniss.) It also ends up causing a division within the fandom for that book. And sometimes, I will admit, it is fun to choose a side and defend it or discuss the characters with another fan but a lot of the time, it ends up causing rage debates within the community and that just isn't fun for me.

Those are some of the reasons as to why I don't like love triangles. And keep in mind, I don't always hate them, usually, they're just kind of there. If you really like them, let me know why. I want to see what you guys think about it because I know you either love them or you hate them. Also let me know if you have any books without any love triangles because I recently read some series with love triangles that I really didn't like (which is why I am writing this) and I need a detox from them. See you next week!
