So today, I'm going to introduce a new type of post to my blog. This one is going to be all about a specific series that I choose to highlight. I could choose a series for a multitude of reasons but nine times out of ten it'll probably for personal reasons. And that's why I choose the two Percy Jackson series. They are important to me and this past week, on Tuesday, was Percy's birthday! Yay! So to celebrate, I'm going to share my story about my love for this series.
I began reading The Lightning Thief about 11 months after I finished The Hunger Games trilogy. (I was actually looking for The City of Bones but I couldn't find it so I settled on reading this.) I was really looking for something really good to read and I heard a lot of people liked it so I figured why not? I knew it was about Greek mythology, which I already found interesting, so I thought it would be a little interesting. Little was way off.
The story, the main plot at least, took a while to kick in but from the first page it was just action packed. That's something that I really appreciate about Rick Riordan's writing style; it's very much act now, explain later. The characters were all so well developed and I thought that they were all just so much fun.
It took me several months to read this series because I was reading each book back to back. Well, as much as I could since there were times when I couldn't find the next book in the series. I couldn't get enough of it and my parents thought I was insane because I got caught up with the books a few months after The Mark of Athena was published. I KNOW. Worst time to get caught up. Ugh, the months leading up to The House of Hades were torture.
But during that time, I got into the fandom through Instagram. Man, that was a trip. The Percy Jackson fandom is absolutely INSANE. We're NOT NORMAL, What the f is wrong with us? Can we take a moment to appreciate the briliant stupidity of the hashtag Persassy Jackson? Like, what the actual fuck? Pardon my language, but really, who comes up with this!? It's so perfect that it hurts but really, it's not normal. But that's also the part that I love most about the fandom is the weirdness of it all. And yet, we all accept it.
This series gave me the full experience of being in a fandom. The fanfiction, the Instagram accounts, the fan art. It gave me it all. And it's perfect. And I know a lot people are probably thinking that this is the saddest thing they ever heard and that I shouldn't be living in a fantasy world but I think that Percy Jackson has let me connect with other people all around the world that I otherwise wouldn't have a reason to. I made so many online friends thanks to the fandom.
It was the book series that truly got me excited to read more. Once I finished the latest book that was published, I wanted to read more, whether it was Percy Jackson or not. I will continue to love and support this series and the author because I have to thank them for a lot.
